More Rope,
Less Talk

Several months ago my rope group and I were in discussion. We were talking about the type of events that we like to do and have done in the past. These included readings from my book, “The Beauty of Kinbaku (or everything you ever wanted to know about Japanese erotic rope bondage when you suddenly realized you didn’t speak Japanese)” and tying exhibitions and artist presentations ranging from tributes to the grandmaster Yukimura Haruki sensei to the wonderful modern graphic artist Sorayama.
Naturally, we all thought this was a wonderful idea and felt very fortunate that we had, within our group, people who are expert enough to do this kind of afternoon event.

The conversation then turned to what could we do that might be helpful to novice or intermediate rope players that we haven’t done before? Someone brighter than I spoke up and said, “What might be helpful is an event where actual questions are answered regarding all types of Japanese rope. That is, more rope, less talk for beginners and even questions from people who want to do suspensions.” In other words, instead of the usual rope social or lecture, the audience’s needs would come first and each ticket buying attendee would get their specific rope questions answered, to the best of our ability.
For most visitors to the dojo these amenities will remain invisible. But for those rope tops and bottoms, photographers, graphic artists and observers who are over 50 or who suffer from health issues that are even more dangerous when exposed to Covid, we hope they will provide some much-needed peace of mind. For us Kinbaku is all about pleasure, beauty and safety, and we always do everything in our power to preserve these pillars of our beautiful art form.
We decided to start slowly and did a first, very limited, gathering with only modest publicity to see if anyone in the rope community in Los Angeles might respond to the idea. We were delighted when a fair number of people joined us on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Altadena for the session. Questions were fielded by my deshi Yzen on suspensions, Remy K Thane handled questions on predicament ties and I dealt with inquiries from beginners about subjects as diverse as “where to buy rope” to “what’s the best two column tie for someone who suffers from wrist injuries?”

The event went over so well we did it a second time and the audience increased! And then we did a third round and had an even larger turnout, as the attached pictures show.

Eventually, the summer months were over and various changes in situation had occurred, but we looked forward to resurrecting the idea again as soon as we could arrange it. It’s now time to do that!
On Sunday, November 3 at 2:00 PM masterkclasses in association with SAKE will be holding our fourth “More Rope, Less Talk“ event. Once again we are looking forward to answering questions on any and all subjects related to Japanese rope bondage. If you’re interested in joining us, please click HERE and, once you buy your ticket, you will be sent the address of the event.
We look forward to seeing you there on Sunday, November 3rd!
